Sylvia Spears
about the artist
Sylvia Spears has lived in the South all her life, moving to Spartanburg after graduation from college with a degree in Studio Art and Art Education. A full-time artist, Spears works almost exclusively in oils, a medium well-suited for her style of painting. Her paintings are an emotional response to the world around her, whether through landscapes, figurative, or abstraction. Sylvia's work has been exhibited in numerous local and regional exhibits and can be found in private collections in the U.S. and England.
about the work
Those familiar with Spears's colorful and impressionistic style also know that she is not constrained by that style. Her paintings are an emotional response to the world around her, and she does not hesitate to depart from expected paths to explore uncharted interactions with her current experiences. In Spears's words, "I try to instill in my work the life that I feel emanates from the subject, even if it is an inanimate object."
Her present work represents both a continuation and an evolution of thought and method. Complementing the distinct but muted brushwork of her normal representational style is a group of more "abstract" works. Viewers familiar with her work will immediately recognize Spears's energy and connect with this latest exploration of color and form."
